The following databases are available from the Library.

Most databases can be accessed from on- and off-campus, using your WPUNJ username and password, unless noted otherwise.

A comprehensive full-text source on business topics, ABI/INFORM features scholarly research from peer-reviewed journals (including over 3,000 full-text publications), trade and industry news, 25,000 Dissertations, 14,000 SSRN working papers, key newspapers such as The Wall Street Journal and The Financial Times, as well as country-and industry-focused reports and data. Specialized subsidiary databases include accounting and tax news, banking and financial services news and research, proprietary information about more than 40,000 public and non-public companies and 225,000 key executives from Hoover's, pharmaceutical and telecommunications industry news, international market and industry research reports, and analytical articles covering world and regional economic and political developments of major significance. Large, interdisciplinary full-text database contains over 8,500 full-text publications, including academic journals, magazines, books, and trade publications. Offers broad subject coverage for a variety of disciplines, including anthropology, area studies, biology, chemistry, ethnic and multicultural studies, food science and technology, general science, geography, law, mathematics, music, pharmaceutical sciences, physics, psychology, religion and theology, women's studies, and many other fields. Partially funded by the the New Jersey State Library.

The Accounting Research Manager database provides full-text access to the major accounting and auditing standards. For accounting, these include the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) Accounting Standards Codification, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Standards, the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) standards, and the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) standards, and the advisory opinions of the Private Company Council and the Emerging Issues Task Force. For auditing, these include the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) Audit and Attest Standards, the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) Auditing Standards, and auditing circulars and other documents from the Office of Management and Budget (OMB). In addition to the published standards, the database also offers supplemental materials offering interpretations and examples.

The American Council of Learned Societies Humanities E-Book Collection offers over 4,600 full-text, cross-searchable books in the humanities selected by scholars for their continuing importance for research and teaching. The collection includes titles from over 100 publishers of scholarly and academic books and covers a wide variety of humanities disciplines. Among the subjects covered are: archaeology, art, Biblical studies, environmental studies, film and media studies, folklore, hip-hop studies, history, Jewish studies, law, LGBT/Queer studies, linguistics, literature and literary criticism, medicine, musicology, performance studies, philosophy, political science, religion, science/technology, sociology, and women’s studies. The interface provides for viewing the books through scanned page images, plain text, or PDF, and 10-page excepts can be downloaded in PDF as well. [1857 - Present]

The Association for Computing Machinery's Digital Library includes the complete text of every article published in ACM journals, newsletters, and conference proceedings. Also included is the master file of the ACM's Special Interest Groups (SIGs), featuring hard-to-find conference proceedings papers and newsletter articles from all of the ACM's 39 SIGs. The site also features the ACM Guide to Computing Literature, a bibliographic database providing citations for over 750,000 journal articles, books, conference proceedings, doctoral dissertations, master's theses, and technical reports from over 3,000 publishers in the field of computing. Bibliographic database contains over 450,000 citations and abstracts for journal and magazine articles, book and media reviews, and dissertations covering the world's scholarly literature about the United States and Canada from prehistory to the present. Includes material from over 1,820 journals and magazines written in over 40 languages, although the majority of items were published in English. Most of the items in the database were issued after 1954. Many records contain links to full-text articles in other Library databases. [1954 - present]

The Art Abstracts database provides high-quality indexing of over 600 periodicals covering all topics in art from 1984 to the present, including 280 peer-reviewed journals, as well as indexing and abstracting of over 13,000 art dissertations, and indexing of almost 200,000 art reproductions. Art Abstracts indexes publications from several countries covering fine, decorative and commercial art as well as photography, folk art, film, architecture, and much more. [1984 - present]

Citations and abstracts for life science and biomedical research literature published in more than 4,000 journals. Subject areas covered include agriculture, biochemistry, biotechnology, botany, ecology, the environment, microbiology, neurology, pharmacology, public health and toxicology. Biological Abstracts contains approximately five million records, with more than 370,000 citations added each year, and links to full-text articles where available. Provided through VALE. Directory of books currently in print (plus out-of-print and forthcoming titles). Includes reviews.

The Encyclopedia Britannica Online, Academic Edition contains the full text of the encyclopedia, enhanced with additional features including a world atlas with country comparison data, a Research Tools section, a video collection, and Britannica Daily, featuring Biography of the Day, This Day in History, and Britannica Blog. The Britannica Online also includes Merriam-Webster's dictionary, containing 225,000 entries, including more than 10,000 new words and definitions.

Full text for nearly 8,350 scholarly business journals and other sources, including full text for more than 1,100 scholarly business publications. Coverage includes virtually all subject areas related to business.

From the opening screen, select the Directory you wish to access. Directories of journals in the fields of business (accounting, economics and finance, management, and marketing), education (curriculum, methods, psychology, administration, technology and library science), and psychology and psychiatry designed to aid scholars and researchers in the publication of manuscripts. For each journal, the directories provide current contact information (address, telephone number, fax number, e-mail address, web site URL) as well as information on publication guidelines, review information and circulation data.

 

The Catalog of U.S. Government Publications is the finding tool for electronic and print publications from the legislative, executive, and judicial branches of the U.S. government. The Catalog contains over 500,000 descriptive records for historical and current publications and provides direct links to those that are available online. [July 1976 - present]

The Child Welfare Information Gateway, a service of the Children's Bureau, Administration for Children and Families, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, maintains an extensive library of materials relating to child welfare, including child abuse prevention, out-of-home care, and adoption. Approximately 200 new items are added each month to its current collection of close to 50,000 items, including peer-reviewed articles, books, evaluation reports, grantee final reports, and program reports. This is a bibliographic database, but many of the items can be found in the Cheng Library's collection or online. [1908 - present]

The Chronicle of Higher Education is a major news publication covering the college and university sector. The online edition of the Chronicle is published every weekday and features news, advice, and jobs for people in academe. The Chronicle's Web site features the complete contents of the latest print format issue; daily news and advice columns; thousands of current job listings; an archive of previously published content; discussion forums; and career-building tools. Free personal accounts are available to members of the WPUNJ community in addition to the campus-wide subscription access. [1989 - Present]

 

Full-text resource containing working papers, policy briefs, books and book chapters, journal articles and abstracts, conference proceedings, case studies, and teaching materials for a wide range of topics in international affairs.

 

The Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) is the most comprehensive resource for locating published research in nursing and allied health. The full text version includes content from over 600 journals indexed in the database, with many article backfiles extending to 1981. Frequently updated, CINAHL also provides searchers with current awareness of the newest journal articles through a rotating file of "Pre-CINAHL" records containing citation information and links to full-text (where available). Clinical Evidence, produced by the BMJ Publishing Group, is a decision-support resource for health professionals providing evidence on the effects of common clinical interventions and systematic reviews of important clinical conditions. Clinical Evidence systematic reviews summarise the current state of knowledge and uncertainty about the prevention and treatment of clinical conditions, based on thorough searches and appraisal of the literature. It describes the best available evidence from systematic reviews, randomized controlled trials, and observational studies where appropriate, and if there is no good evidence it says so.

The Cochrane Library is a collection of six databases containing different types of high-quality, independent evidence to inform healthcare decision-making. The Library contains full-text systematic reviews in health care, details of published articles on controlled trails (including the methods used), abstracts of systematic reviews that have been quality-assessed, details of completed and ongoing health technology assessments, and economic evaluations of competing healthcare interventions from around the world.

Online portal to communication disorders information resources includes a bibliographic database with citations and abstracts for books, journal articles, and dissertations; directories to authors and institutions; a dictionary of speech-language pathology and audiology terms; and a database of web sites useful for research. Includes powerful browsing, searching and save/exporting features. The database currently contains over 280,000 records, and it is updated monthly. Now provided on the ProQuest Search Platform. Full-text index to articles from over 200 periodical titles in the field of communications and mass media studies, with citations and abstracts for articles from over 100 additional periodicals.

Full-text research reports and presentations on topical business issues. Includes surveys and case studies of major companies and trends in the areas of strategy, corporate governance, organizational effectiveness, structure, leadership, human resources, ethics, customer relationship management, work force issues, and much more. The database also features working papers in economic research, current news on economic indicators and the monthly publication Straight Talk. [1998 - present]

 

From the opening screen, select the "CQ Researcher" or the "CQ Magazine" (formerly the "CQ Weekly"). Full-text coverage is available for the Magazine/Weekly from 1983 to the present and for the Researcher from November 1923 to the present.

 

The Credo Reference database is a portal to over 840 full-text reference titles from over 80 major publishers. Easy to search and browse, the Credo platform provides access to text, images, maps, statistics, and graphic concept maps to illustrate connections among and between topics. The titles, which range across subjects in art, biography, business, geography, history language, law, literature, medicine, music, philosophy, psychology, religion, science, the social sciences, and technology, are fully integrated through the Credo search platform, and the Credo database also provides numerous points for accessing other Cheng Library resources. Credo is a most useful starting point for general research on almost any topic.

Criminal Justice Abstracts, now provided through EBSCO, contains comprehensive coverage of international journals, books, reports, dissertations and unpublished papers on criminology and related disciplines. Subject areas covered by this database include crime trends, crime prevention and deterrence, juvenile delinquency, juvenile justice, police, courts, punishment and sentencing. Updated quarterly, there are currently over 100,000 citation records in the database. [1968 - Present]

The ERIC database, sponsored by the Institute of Education Sciences of the U.S. Department of Education, provides access to more than 1.6 million bibliographic records of journal articles and other education-related materials. Included in the database are citation records, abstracts, and (where available) full-text links for journal articles, books, research syntheses, conference papers, technical reports, policy papers, and other education-related materials. The public version of the ERIC database, hosted by the Institute of Education Sciences IES) of the U.S. Department of Education, provides access to the citation records of the ERIC database plus all available ERIC documents. This version of the search interface also includes links to publication pages for IES reports, IES funding information, and "What Works" clearninghouse study review pages, plus standardized identifiers for locations, assessments and surveys, and laws for easier refinement of search results. A peer-reviewed flag has also been added to qualified grey literature. [1966 - Present]

Produced in cooperation with the John Carter Brown Library, this database provides a comprehensive guide to printed records about the Americas written in Europe before 1750 from European Americana: A Chronological Guide to Works Printed In Europe Relating to the Americas, 1493-1750. The database contains more than 32,000 records, and covers the history of European exploration as well as portrayals of native American peoples. This authoritative bibliography is well-known and respected by scholars worldwide, and a valuable index for libraries, researchers and individuals interested in European works that relate to the Americas. It was co-developed by John Alden and the Curator of European Books at The John Carter Brown Library, Dennis Landis. The John Carter Brown Library, founded in 1846, is a foremost repository of rare books and materials and is a center for advanced research in history and the humanities. [1493 - 1750]

This database includes extensive content for all applicable areas of film and television research, including film and television theory, preservation and restoration, screenwriting, production, cinematography, technical aspects and reviews. Online version of Salem Press' three-volume reference encyclopedia contains 465 articles ranging in length from 500 to 3,000 words and covering a wide variety of topics in forensic science, including specific types of investigations, techniques, equipment, evidence, the role of forensic science in the legal system, specific historical subjects, depictions of forensics in the media, and much more.

GenderWatch is a full-text database useful for gender and women's studies, and gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) research. The database offers over 300 titles, with more than 250 in full-text, from an array of academic, radical, community and independent presses, with coverage back to 1970. Researchers and teachers may access more than 219,000 full articles on wide-ranging topics like sexuality, religion, societal roles, feminism, masculinity, eating disorders, healthcare, and the workplace. The Health and Psychosocial Instruments database provides access to information on measurement instruments (i.e., questionnaires, interview schedules, checklists, index measures, coding schemes and manuals, rating scales, projective techniques, vignettes and scenarios, tests) in the health fields, psychosocial sciences, organizational behavior, and library and information science. A specialist in industry information, IBISWorld provides research and analysis of over 700 U.S. industries and almost 4,000 product segments. Its reports are written at the 5-digit level of the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) and they can be searched or browsed within the database according to NAICS code. The reports, updated regularly, provide detailed and comprehensive industry overviews, performance evaluations, an analysis of products and markets, the competitive landscape, an examination of major companies in each industry, operating conditions, and key statistics. The reports, which vary in length between approximately 30 and 50 pages, can be downloaded as complete PDF files, printed by individual section, or searched internally for key terms. The database also provides brief four-page summary reports for each industry covering key statistics, market share and external drivers, industry benchmarks including major markets and cost structure, an industry performance summary, and major industry issue and questions. The summary reports can also be downloaded and printed.

 

The International Directory of Company Histories offers accurate and detailed information on the development of the world's largest and most influential companies. Each three- to five-page entry is detailed with facts gathered from popular magazines, academic periodicals, books, annual reports and the archives of the companies themselves. Entries provide information on founders, expansions and losses, labor/management actions, NAICS codes, key dates, ticker symbol, principal subsidiaries, divisions, operating units, and competitors, along with relevant statistics, dates and the names of key players. The Directory, which is hosted on the Gale Virtual Reference Library platform, can be browsed or searched by keyword. As new volumes are published, they will be added to the online platform for expanded coverage.

 

The International Index to Music Periodicals (IIMP) provides access to articles from over 400 scholarly and popular periodicals in the areas of classical music, opera, jazz, popular music and pop culture, music education, musicology, music theory, and many others. There is particularly strong coverage of performance, music education, and jazz. The database currently contains over 600,000 records, offering both current and retrospective coverage, with over 235,000 records from 1874 to 1996. [1874 - Present]

Linguistics and Language Behavior Abstracts indexes the international literature in linguistics and related disciplines in the language sciences. The database covers all aspects of the study of language including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. The database provides abstracts and - where available - links to the full-text of journal articles, plus citations to book reviews drawn from over 1,500 publications, and it also provides abstracts of books, book chapters, and dissertations. Full-text literary reference database contains over 27,000 plot summaries, synopses and work overviews; nearly 100,000 articles/essays of literary criticism; over 140,000 author biographies; over 569,000 book reviews; the text of 57,000 classic/contemporary poems and 14,500 classic/contemporary short stories; 4,700 author interviews; and over 7,100 classic literary texts. Full-text database containing content from over 140 popular, middle school magazines. All full text articles are assigned a reading level indicator (Lexiles). Full text is also available for thousands of biographies and historical essays. The database also features primary source documents in American history, material from popular middle school reference resources, and an image collection of over 290,000 photos, maps and flags.

The MLA International Bibliography is a bibliographic database to journal articles, books, and dissertations relating to all forms of human communication. Coverage includes literature from all over the world - Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North and South America. Folklore is represented by folk literature, music, art, rituals, and belief systems. Linguistics and language materials range from history and theory of linguistics, comparative linguistics, semantics, stylistics, and syntax to translation. Other topics include literary theory and criticism, dramatic arts (film, radio, television, theater), and history of printing and publishing. The database currently contains over 2 million records back to 1926 and covers over 4,400 journals. Links to full-text articles are provided in the database where these are available. Bibliographic database containing over 1.3 million citation records for articles from more than 425 international music periodicals, with full-text access for selected titles. The majority of citation records date from 1996 to the present, with approximately 200,000 records covering the period from 1874 to 1995. The database covers a comprehensive range of subject areas in both scholarly and popular music journals. Articles examine the full spectrum of subjects and all aspects of music, including music education, performance, ethnomusicology, musical theater, theory, popular music forms and composition. The National Bureau of Economic Research is the nation's leading nonprofit economic research organization. Founded in 1920, the NBER is a private, nonpartisan organization dedicated to promoting a greater understanding of how the economy works. The Working Papers collection makes available online several thousand papers produced by NBER researchers from 1973 to the present. The full text of the papers is available in PDF format. Full-text access to Nature, an interdisciplinary science journal that publishes peer-reviewed research in all fields of science and technology. Nature also provides news and interpretation of topical and coming trends affecting science, scientists and the wider public. [1997 - Present]

 

The Naxos Music Library is a large online classical music library. It offers streaming audio access to over 100,000 albums and features over 1.4 million tracks covering both standard and rare repertoire. Over 800 new albums are added to the library every month. The database offers the complete Naxos and Marco Polo catalogues plus the complete catalogues or selected titles from over 650 record labels. Along with classical music, a selection of jazz, world, and pop/rock are also represented. The Naxos Music Library can be accessed from any computer, anywhere, anytime. With the iPhone/iPod and Android mobile apps, subscribers can also access the service on the go, and the HTLM5 player can stream music though the standard internet connection of the most phones and tablets. The contents of the library can be searched by composer, work, genre and label; by keyword search; and by a sophisticated advanced search engine with up to 11 combined search criteria. In addition to the audio, Naxos Music Library provides liner notes for many recordings. Listeners can create personalized playlists or use predefined Naxos Music Library playlists.

Naxos Music Library Jazz is one of the most comprehensive collections of jazz music available online. Naxos Music Library Jazz comprises Naxos Jazz, the catalogue of Blue Note Records, and the 22 labels of Fantasy Jazz along with Prophone and Proprius. It currently offers over 100,000 tracks of jazz from 260 labels, and over 12,000 jazz artists are represented. U.S.-based Fantasy has the world's deepest jazz catalogue and offers the very best in blues and R&B. Blue Note offers albums featuring the legendary artist John Coltrane and iconic artists such as Herbie Hancock, Dexter Gordon, Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter and many others.

NJVID provides access to hundreds of educational streaming video titles that can be viewed online, by members of the William Paterson University community (faculty, staff and students). Videos are available from multiple vendors, and include the entire Intelecom collection of video clips from a variety of disciplines (Sociology, Psychology, Health, etc.). Use your WPUNJ username and password to access these videos.

Providing subject access for thousands of fiction and non-fiction titles aimed at the K-8 population, NoveList K-8 Plus also offers full-text reviews for many titles from sources like School Library Journal and Booklist. The database also provides access to teacher resources for promoting reading, including bibliographies and articles on teaching with fiction, scripts of book talks, and tips on using picture books as a springboard to interesting and educational activities.

The Statista database is a portal to statistical information, pulling together data on over 80.000 topics from over 18.000 sources onto a single platform. Categorized into 21 market sectors, Statista.com provides companies, business customers, research institutions, and the academic community with direct access to quantitative data on media, business, finance, politics, and a wide variety of other areas of interest or markets. Data sources include market research reports, such as the Ipsos Affluent Survey published annually by Ipsos Media, Simmons National Consumer Studies and Consumer Insights from Scarborough Research, as well as trade publications, scientific journals, and government databases. For each statistic, Statista provides available information about the source, release date, number of respondents, and any other relevant details to facilitate verification. The data can easily be exported to graphic formats, Excel, or PowerPoint for analysis or incorporation into presentations.

The Statistical Abstract of the United States is the most authoritative and comprehensive summary of statistics on the social, political, and economic organization of the United States. It offers convenient access to a wide variety of data on such topics as population, education, elections, all major sectos of the economy, health and nutrition, government, science and technology, transportation, housing, and much more. Every table in the Statistical Abstract provides citations to more extensive and detailed sources of data for its subject, which also makes it an efficient guide to data sources.
