William Paterson University's Career Development Center offers a wide variety of services and resources to assist students with career and employment goals. Programs include internships, on-campus recruiting, online computerized job matching, workshops on such topics as resume writing and employment interviews, and more.

General Career/Employment Information

America's Career InfoNet
A one-stop portal containing several resources for career research. Includes information about typical wages and employment trends across occupations and industries, tools for checking your own education, knowledge, skills and abilities against requirements for most occupations, a searchable job bank for employer contact information nationwide, cost of living data, and state profiles with labor market conditions. The site also contains several thousand links to other career resources available on the web.
Site developed career expert Richard Bolles as a supplement to his best-seeling book What Color is Your Parachute? contains advice for using the internet as a job-hunting tool, with articles and links for online resources covering employment research, establishing contacts with potential employers, job listings, resumes, and general job-hunting strategies.
New Jersey Labor Market Information
This site, maintained by the Office of Labor Planning and Analysis (New Jersey Department of Labor), includes several sources of economic and demographic data related to the labor market and job outlook forecasting in New Jersey.
O*Net Online (Occupational Information Network)
O*NET, the Occupational Information Network, is a comprehensive database of worker attributes and job characteristics developed for the U.S. Department of Labor. As the replacement for the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT), O*NET will be the nation's primary source of occupational information. The database includes information on skills, abilities, knowledges, work activities, and interests associated with occupations. This information can be used to facilitate career exploration, vocational counseling, and a variety of human resources functions, such as developing job orders and position descriptions and aligning training with current workplace needs. Information in O*NET is available for over 950 occupations.
Occupational Employment and Wage Estimates
This site, hosted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, provides employment and wage estimates information by occupation (and occupational sector). The data is provided at the national, state, and metropolitan area levels.
Occupational Outlook Handbook
Published annually by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Handbook describes dozens of jobs in professional and vocational fields, with details about required qualifications, expected salaries, and employment outlook. During the year the Occupational Outlook Quarterly updates information in the Handbook.

AfterCollege is a service for college students and recent graduates who are looking for entry level jobs, internships, and other opportunities. Registration is required to post a resume and receive invitations from employers or search 120,000+ jobs from over 30,000 employers.
Site hosted by recruitment advertising publisher Recourse Communications Inc. features an online job bank tailored to the state.
Large and established online recruiting service matches employers to job-seekers through its jobs database and resume posting service.
The search feature allows geographic, industry, and/or keyword search for thousands of jobs, updated daily. Also includes resume posting and other tools.

One of the newest and most comprehensive sites for job/career hunting, Monster.com was launched in 1999 following the merger of The Monster Board and the Online Career Center. The site includes international job listings, a resume builder, a job search "agent," and job search skills seminars.

The New Jersey section of America's Job Bank, a partnership between the U.S. Department of Labor and the state operated public Employment Service. One of the largest online job resources available.
New Jersey Online: Advance Jobs
A "classifieds" directory containing thousands of Help Wanted ads from The Star-Ledger, The Times (Trenton), Jersey Journal, and NJ Online advertisers.
Planet Jobs (Philadelphia Inquirer)
Searchable jobs database with a focus on the Philadelphia area.
The Riley Guide - Employment Opportunities and Job Resources on the Internet
Comprehensive job resource site includes links to general and industry-specific job banks, tools for conducting job research, salary surveys, and other career-related information.
Workforce New Jersey Public Information Network
The purpose of the Workforce New Jersey Public Information Network is to enable workers, students, and those seeking employment, as well as the employer community, to access a rich variety of information including: education, employment opportunities, training opportunities, labor market information, job search tools, and social services. The network is sponsored through a U.S. Department of Labor One-Stop Career Center grant.

A free site for locating executive, managerial and professional jobs in business and technology, careers.wsj.com draws its content from The Wall Street Journal and its Interactive Edition, both published by Dow Jones & Co. Includes daily updates of critical news, features and trends that are relevant, whether you're searching for a new position or striving to improve the job you have. The jobs database is updated twice weekly. Formerly the National Business Employment Weekly.
Opportunity Knocks (for the nonprofit sector)
Electronic source of nonprofit job listings for administrative, staff and professional positions. Its comprehensive, national job database contains hundreds of jobs not included in the regional print editions of the OpportunityNOCs magazine.

Company Research

Search for company information by business name or by industry. Many companies are now posting job listings on their WWW site.

Hoover's Company Profiles in ABI/Inform
Hoover's Company Profiles contain detailed information on approximately 4,000 companies in the U.S. and around the world. The profiles usually feature information on a company's strategy, ownership, and position in its industry; historical details; a list of officers and details about them; geographical information; a company's products, services, brand names, divisions, subsidiaries, and joint ventures; and major competitors. To retrieve the profiles limit your search to "Hoover's Company Profiles" in the "Publication Name" field on the search screen when you enter the names of companies. Please note that access to this database is restricted to currently enrolled students, faculty and staff.
Mergent Online
Quick access to U.S. and international company information, including financial data, updates, SEC filings, and news. Please note that access to this database is restricted to currently enrolled students, faculty and staff.
Yellow Pages - Menu
Yellow pages on the web can be used to locate business web sites for conducting background research on companies.
EDGAR Database
The EDGAR database of corporate information contains electronic filings by corporations to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Feminist Career Center

Health Care and Medical Employment Resources
Site hosted by Pam Pohly Associates, a management consulting and executive search firm for the health care industry, includes links to health care employment sites, a directory of major health care employers, articles and interview tips, and a directory of recruiters.
Idealist.org's Career Center
Career research tool features hundreds of job, internship and volunteer opportunities from over 33,000 nonprofit and community organizations in 165 countries.
Specialized job bank for all sectors and positions in law enforcement, including public, private and academic jobs in local, state and federal jurisdictions.
scijobs.org (Scientist's Employment Network)
The product of a group of recent Ph.D. graduates in the natural sciences who have moved on to positions in academia and industry, scijobs.org features job listings in biology, chemistry, and related fields. Its specialized job database currently features over 14,000 jobs from over 500 different university, nonprofit, and industrial employers.
A site for social workers and other social service professionals to start looking for a social work or social service job, whether in mental health, substance abuse, children and youth, medical social work, criminal justice, domestic violence, community organizing and outreach, homelessness or a variety of other areas.

Electronic Mailing Lists

Mailing lists are electronic forums with a specialized subject focus. To sign up for a mailing list, you first need an e-mail account. On the WPUNJ campus, go to the computer labs at the Library, the Atrium, or the Science Lab (Room #217) and ask the student assistants for help. Instructions for signing up for a specific list may be found when searching the two sites listed below.
